Cyndi Thomason: Women Entrepreneur, Ecommerce Profit First Advisor and Accountant, Author, and Public Speaker
Meet Cyndi Thomason
After I wrote my first book to help ecommerce sellers get control of their business finances and as my business was growing and not needing me as much, I experienced a sense of a loss, mild grief, in fact. Wrestling with this uncertainty of direction, a friend and Profit First Professional colleague, John Briggs, asked me: "What is your personal mission?” I remember feeling a little confused by the question at first because missions were for organizations, at least in my mind at the time. But out of my mouth came the answer as if I had tattooed it on the back of my hand. My mission is to learn and teach others to develop confidence, competence, and peace on this life's journey. Where did this insight come from? It felt so right and was just waiting for someone to ask me the right question.
Looking back over my life, I realized I have been learning and teaching. I recently found a coloring book that my mom had saved because I had colored a lot of the pictures. What was interesting to me was that my brother had also colored in the book. He is younger than me and staying in the line wasn’t a skill he had mastered. Toward the end of the book, he had improved but what was so funny for me to discover now were my notes to him on the page. “Very Good! Brilliant!" I even drew a peace sign! I must have been eight or nine years old at the time. Here’s the picture with my orange crayon notes.
In my “career” job they would send me to train because I could come back and teach the rest of the organization. I was a member of the American Society of Training and Development (now known as Association of Talent Development). I loved to take the base material and then turn it into learning for the staff. I remember teaching strategic planning and I dressed up as Shirley Holmes (Sherlock’s long-lost sister) as I guided them through an exercise to understand what happened to the railroad industry as it failed to plan for the future.
As a stay-at-home mom, I had time for my passion, gardening. I became a Master Gardener in Missouri and Arkansas. I loved gardening with my great grandmother and my grandfather as a child, so I was thrilled to help launch the Garden and Grow programs for the counties where we lived in both states. When the doctor diagnosed my daughter with dyslexia and informed us that the teaching method she needed for her learning style had no teachers in our area, I jumped online and found a school in South Carolina that would teach me to teach her.
